Is toner really necessary?

Toner is one skincare product that we often overlook. For years we considered it an unnecessary extra step that could strip your skin of moisture because of drying ingredients and alcohol-based formulas. Thanks to the ‘clean’ beauty revolution, toner is back in vogue as a must-have skincare product. There’s still much debate about whether toner is really necessary. We’re rounding up everything you need to know about skin toners so you can decide if it’s a must-have second step for your skincare routine.

What is a Toner + How Do You Use It?

A toner is a skincare product that can help remove any left-over residue and dead skin cells that your cleanser didn’t catch. Everyone’s skincare routine will include, at a minimum, a cleanser and moisturiser. In an ideal world, you should be using serums and facial oils before moisturising. You can add in a skin toner after cleansing but before applying serums or oils, while your skin is still a little damp. A toner can be used as part of your nightly routine or twice a day. A face toner is traditionally applied with a cotton pad.

The Benefits of Using a Toner

Using a toner can minimise the appearance of enlarged pores. A toner can help your skin better absorb the active ingredients in your serums and moisturiser, helping you achieve ultimate results. Most of the toners you see on the market today have a moisturising formula to add an extra touch of hydration to your skin. A skin toner can help balance your skin’s pH level to prevent excess sebum production and prevent acne breakouts by reducing your skin to a slightly acidic state. The best toner will have a water-based consistency with added active ingredients like salicylic acid to cleanse your skin.

Is a face toner really necessary? The short answer is – not for everyone.

When you find the right toner for your skin type, it can make all the difference. If you have dry or sensitive skin, you’ll want to make sure your toner is alcohol-free and rich in moisturising ingredients like hyaluronic acid, which can soothe your skin. For oily skin, stay on the lookout for a skin toner with salicylic acid and alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) that can help clear out your pores. If you don’t think a toner is for you, there are other products which can help you achieve similar results. You can double cleanse to make sure you catch any left-over product residue and to clean your pores. A micellar water and cleansing balm are the perfect double cleansing duo. The first product will break down your makeup and remove excess oils, while the second cleanser will clean your skin. If you decide to go with the double cleansing option, choose two gentle products to prevent dryness. A face toner is a skincare product that everyone should try at least once. While it’s not for everyone, it can help you control oil production, hydrate your skin and make sure you get rid of every drop of makeup.
